July 4th Fireworks over Evansville Indiana, 2005 |
Photography, for me, started as a hobby when Bought an old 35mm Petri camera while stationed in Germany in the U.S. Army, then upon my return to civilian life, purchased on old Nikormat 35mm camera from Photographer, Daniel Knight. Once bitten by the “shutterbug”, photography was a serious hobby for many years, and eventually it dawned on me that I could possibly make this hobby pay for itself. One of my first clients was the University of Evansville Sports Information Department, whom I contacted on the advice of a photographer/friend, Greg Smith. I still shoot sports for UE to this day. Shooting for UE gave me enough experience shooting sports that I was able to land a freelance spot at the Evansville Courier & Press, where I spent a few years shooting sports, and some feature assignments. For about 20 years, I also developed clients who were interested in senior photos, youth athletic photos, and a few weddings along the way. I have developed a good relationship through the years, with the Evansville Convention and Visitors Bureau. Around 2004 I was fortunate to have begun as a freelance shooter for Tucker Publishing Group, and the magazines they produce (Evansville Living Magazine, Evansville Business Magazine, City View, and To Your Health) keep me pretty busy, and allow me to continue shooting the kinds of images I really enjoy, documenting life and events in and around Evansville. Currently my primary tools are Canon Digital cameras and lenses. I love making nice images, and am very fortunate to be able to earn my living doing something I really love to do. I’ve been told by a couple of Journalism teachers locally that they use my relatively new website as a teaching tool for their photography students, and that means a lot to me. Anytime you can be a positive role model for a kid, it makes you feel pretty good! Drop by and check out the website anytime at: http://www.markmccoyphotography.com People seem to really like my work, but I don’t take credit for much of anything except for the dedication to the craft, and willingness to work hard. Any decent images that come from my cameras are simply a result of an almost lifelong love of photography, and the bits and pieces of photographer friends, or cohorts I have hung out with, or worked with in the past, that tag along with me while I work. Guys like my good friends Kent Whitehead, Gary Admire, Greg Smith & Don Hardesty. Guys like Bob Gwaltney, Kevin Swank, Sonny Brown, Richard Hicks, Don Goodaker, and Bill Adkins at the Courier and Press. Most of the guys above are so much more talented than me, but that’s okay. I’ve never claimed, or wanted to be thought of as “better” than anybody. Only to be respected for the work I do, and in my efforts to be honest and treat people right. Life is far too short for me to look at it any other way. I live in Evansville with my wife, Marty, my sons Casey (20) currently training in the National Guard, & Dylan (14), a freshman and Quarterback at Bosse High School. There is a quote I have always loved, and while it is not specifically about photography, I apply it to what I do, and firmly believe it applies to anything in life: “A very great vision is needed and the man |
To know Mark is to be in contact with a photo talent that could create almost any kind of image. Although Mark doesn't know this. His work can be sensitive when it needs to be and quite direct too. Mark like waterfalls and he will travel and sacrifice to shoot one. Mark probably knows more waterdall locations than anyone in the area, His sports photos are good enough to compete with the major league sports shooters. |
